It makes me happy to read all of this and imagine what we might have someday. I guess my mom said when i was eight I declared my life goals as having a cabin in the woods and a whole room full of books. Good goals!

Cabin, woods, books, yes.

But no kayak in the water?
No chickens?
No goats, sheep, hogs?
No maple?
No ginseng?
No mushroom logs?

A cabin is nice, woods are nice, books are great!

Fish can be nice too. Eggs and poultry are nice, Mutton, lamb, haggis, sausage and ham are nice. Maple syrup and sugar is nice.
herbs and gourmet mushrooms are good too.

How Much Land?-hanover.png
There is plenty of wide open spaces in the Western Mountains waiting for a family from Alaska to homestead.

And plenty in Penobscot County where it isn't all straight up and down. I used to hunt that hard country when I was 29. I learned that deer like an easy life where they don't have to climb all the time. Now I do too.

ROTFL - good one, NMLM! Now we know where to look for land when the time comes! I don't want to chase deer up and down the hills, either!

I am mainly a lurker that very much enjoys this forum. No offense intended, but I am ROTFL myself with a vivid, funny picture that popped into my head reading this. I can just imagine someone chasing a deer (trying to "catch" it)...both on level land and up and down hills. Back on topic, I'm partial to western Maine because that is where most of my family is. More is better, but even an acre of land anywhere in Maine can be a little bit of Paradise.

Chase deer?

It is better to open a window, lean out, line-up the sights and squeeze slowly.

Default This is 80 acres in Nome!

So I was really trying to figure out exactly how much land would be 40 or 80 acres would be. So I went to Google Earth and looked at the village where we live, Nome, and drew out what 40 acres square would be, then another 40, to equal 80. It is more than half the town! It was cool. So then we drove around town imagining the beginning of our land, and driving the distance. We imagined skiing the distance, or walking the distance. Eighty acres is quite a bit of land!
