What does everyone fly into / out of up there? We can fly any place I suppose and drive up the rest of the way, just stay at hotel along the way, but I'd like to get as close to possible and spend as much time as we can on the island.

Bangor is the closest airport in the US, but it is much more expensive, twice as much as flying into Portland and driving the 5 hours to Eastport. I had to give over $600 for a round trip ticket to Bangor, when a round trip ticket to Portland was only a bit over $200.

Ack!! Portland it is. And I looked at it on the map and if we do Portland it looks like we can drive right up US1. From what I remember, though it's been almost 10 years , that was an absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking drive.

Route 1 is the long road. Take 95 up to Bangor, to 395Eto15N to9E to 1, into Calais and follow 1S to 190 into Eastport.

If you land in Portland, you will have a scenic drive up Route 1 which may take 4.5 to 5 hrs to get to Eastport.
If you take 95 North to Route 9 then maybe 4.
But it always depends on your speed.

Check into St John, New Brunswick for flights too. I don't have any idea what the prices are, but it's worth checking

Thanks Molly!!

I saw the 95 route, but I spend 20 hours a week on an interstate. I'd love a drive up the coast! I'm a big fan of road trips!!

Our interstate is not like the interstate that you're used to. I understand the desire to drive the coast, and I'm not really trying to discourage you from doing that. I just think that once you get here you're going to be surprised to see that most of our interstate is two lanes, and trees trees trees, with the towns/cities in between. It's not the stressful, busy, heavily traveled road that you may think of when you hear the word "interstate". In southern Maine it can get busy, but even *very* mild compared to an area such as Chicago or Houston or Atlanta.... or even traveling the highways in Mass. This really doesn't even compare. I can't remember, I'm sorry.... have you been to Maine before?
