Yep. When we asked the Belfast locals where we could buy sleds to take the kids "sledding", they looked at us funny. We found out they thought we were talking about snowmobiles!

They said, "Oh, we call that 'sliding'!"

Slide = no motor.

Sled= has motor.

I always slide on my butt. Face first just doesn't feel right, especially when there are trees near by.

For me there's three versions of going down a hill w/o a motor over snow:

Sled: it's got runners and is made of wood.
Toboggan: no runners and can be plastic or wood.
Tube: Inflatable with a hole in the middle.

I say sledding for sled or toboggan. Tubing for the third option.

We used to slide on a trunk from a 50's something Chevrolet. We would get several people on it. My uncle would haul it back up the hill with the ski doo and we would have to walk. The rig was fast and he used to put a coat of wax on it to speed it up even more.

Yes! I remember teachers pouring water on kids tongues to release them from the monkey bars!

My sister called on her way to work to tell me how beautiful Katahdin is this morning. The sun is shining on the fresh snow. I'm so tempted to drive over to take photos.
