This is always a good subject just before deer season!
Have you finished sighting yours in yet?

I own three .30-30 rifles, a Weatherby Mark V in 7mm-08 ,and a .260 Remington I use for deer. Along with an old Ithaca 12 gauge pump with 00 buckshot and saboted slugs.

This season I have again chosen the .260 Remington. It's a light bolt action rifle with a detatchable magazine. I have a Nikon 3-9 x 40 mm Monarch scope on it. Great scope. It really helps early in the morning and right after sunset. I have the rifle sighted dead on at 100 yards. It shoots a consistent 1.5 inch group at 100 yards. I drew a doe permit for my area so all I need is for one to walk through the back yard!

Looking forward to long days in the woods, Hunter's breakfasts, deer stories,
close encounters with the wiley whitetail, picking off ticks nightly!!,Checking the local tagging station list, hanging one up! Cutting and freezing parties with a big pan of peppers and onions going and all the venison you can possibly wolf down!, sausage making, jerky making, trying the latest (usually stupid) new inventions....it's all great fun!

Most of the time use the 30-30 its done its fair share of landing some meat, use the .308 for elk, not so lucky, thank goodness for the market. Rut seems to be runnin late here in washington, best of luck to all of you maineah's

Last year I shot my first deer...a 7 -point buck with one broken tine. When we cut em up we found he had a big wound on his spine where the bone had healed from a car wreck or something. I think I harvested a tough ol' granpappy. And he was still sniffing around and marking for does when I saw him. Now there's sign of a really big buck coming around, haven't seen him though.

Well good for you tcrackly! That's a nice deer for a first one! Good for you! I hope you get a chance on the big one this year. What kind of gun did you use for your first deer?

Thanks. I used my husband's 32 special. I like the lever action. We were looking for a Savage modell 99 in 308 but didn't find a decent one that I could afford. So this season I have a Ruger 44 mag carbine, but I still need to sight it in.
