Anyone else heard this? I've heard it just can not compete and is closing soon.

I heard the same thing....no great loss as you can always get your plastic flamingos for the front yard at Senters in Bath.

What in the world is Grand City? I am still lamenting about the downtown A&P closing 20 years ago.

We have been a couple of times. The food is OK though nothing to write home about. It has a following and does pretty well. I won't tell you not to try it as you may really like it.

Default Very sad.

The Times Record did a story on the closing a few weeks ago, you might find it in their archives on line. The store is owned by the employees. They bought it when WT Grants closed their doors at Cooks Corner and changed the name back in the late 70's. The economy being what it is right now made it tough going.

I will miss their breakfast the most. Where else can you go and grab a couple eggs, home fries and toast for $2.89? The place is always spotless, the same waitresses have been there since Jesus was a boy.
What I loved the most about the waitress's is they would feed the less fortunate people from the downtown area, out of their own pockets. The waitresses looked after them and made sure they got a good breakfast every morning and that they were all bundled up on a bitter cold morning.

The downstairs sure has plenty of widgets. A lot of the elderly would shop downstairs for their fabric and patterns, pretty big size department. How many memieres (sp?) bought their yarn there to go home and knit mittens only to donate them to the Santa Fund every year.

Fond memories - Grand City will certainly be missed by the residents of downtown Brunswick.

A lot of people rave about The Great Impasta. While I'm not a fan of italian food, many people like it and they have a pretty big following. Many people go there after the Maine State Theatre shows for dinner. They serve a little later than the other restaurants in town.

It's "Mamere". It's an affectionate French term for Grandma. It is applied to French ladies of a certain age by neighbors and friends regardless of whether they are related or not.
