Pella makes about the best from what we saw . We just didn't want to mortgage the house to put windows in it!

I'm glad this thread came up, I need new windows too, the ones I have are really lousy for being a relatively young house. I wouldn't want to get the mods mad at me by dissing a brand name...but if you see windows that put you in mind of Georgia fruit, those are the ones.

I'll say it. Peachtree stinks on ice! Worse set of "thermal pane" windows I have ever seen. And their doors are almost as useless as their windows. The both keep out the animals, but sure as heck don't do much for drafts and cold.

Your windows are that loud?

Our windows are fairly quite.

I have opened a window, when wild turkey were within 20 feet away from the window, and the first thing to spook the turkeys was my voice.

Windows '95 was good '98 even better. XP was OK but I haven't heard much love for Vista yet!

Home Despot sells American Craftsman windows. They are vinyl and a product of Andersen windows. They are quite affordable.
We have been putting them in our camp and are very pleased with the appearance and performance.

We got a lifetime unconditional guarantee from Air Tite for ours. 8 windows and we had to take out a loan... and that was over 10 years ago. Not sure if these guys are up in Maine or not. They did a quick job and with older plaster walls they should have taken more care(long story), but overall I have been really happy with them.

Pella and Anderson sold at the big box stores are not the same grade as those wholesaled through their dealers. Just like everything from tools to plumbing fixtures, the manufacturers sell a cheaper grade through the Home Depot crowd.

Have a customer that I've done updates to his $ 2.4 million house. The original builder used Pella windows. Nine years into the ten year warranty the sash started rotting in a few units. Pella's factory service was less than satisfactory - I'll leave it at that. After the ten year mark the time bomb has gone off. Multiple failures. I'm considering Marvin replacement sash in the Pella frames. Some companies put more effort into marketing than building a product that lasts.

My advice is talk to people in your area and see what is good value. Hire a reliable and qualified local contractor or follow manufacturer's instructions to the letter if you install them yourself. Pay special attention to wraping and flashing the openings. I can't tell you how much wood rot I've repaired over the years due to faulty window and door installations.

Please do not let Blowe's or Home Despot install them for you. I could post ten pages on horror stories of homeowners' bad experiances with big box installations.
