You should really visit in the middle of the winter. That is the very best way to know if you will like the weather or not. Maine summers are nothing at all like Maine winters.

I agree whole heartedly with this post. Summer weather in Maine is the finest anywhere.....winter?? Not so much. That's why 60%-70% of the homes along the coast and islands are empty all winter!

James, please call your broker or your administrator..... and write yourself a script too. You're going to need it!

Take 2 and call me in the morning.

If his retirement is like mine... it's now a 201k... rapidly becoming a 101.

Some 401k's allow you to invest in non volatile muncipal bonds and other safe low risk investments. These have been OK for the most part. The aggressive investments have been hit hard.

The federal pension system (if you're civilian - and so I'm stretching and thinking if he works for a state it may be the same thing) is set up so you get a percentage of profit sharing... in other words, if you earn 50k, they give you 3% of that amount after 3 years of being with them which would be a $1500 free bonus into your retirement account... in his case as in civilian federal government systems, that would be your 401,..... the pension % upon retirement is set upon when you came onboard and what the law was at that time within the federal program. For instance again... it's generally from the past been 75% of your top 3 earning years if you're a military officer, now down to about 50% when my exDH retired, and now somewhat less than that... in the 35-45% of your highest 3 years of earnings.

If he's referring to that kind of system, then I get it. If he's not, I have no clue what he's talking about for a retirement program.

But I also don't have a clue how his 401 wasn't tied to the stock market. It would only have been protected if it had been moved into cd's or bonds.
