It has nothing to do with crime...after all, it's one of the safest places in regards to crime...it has to do with the fact it's going to go well below zero tonight and the complex I live at just had a propane line rupture and now on the coldest night of the year we have no heat. At least in the warmer climates you don't have the fluctuation between the warm and freezing cold weather that causes stress on the gas and propane lines (and water for that matter) that causes the pipes to burst. We are damn lucky someone caught the leak because all it would have taken is someone to walk by with a cigarette and you would have been reading about us on the news when all 150+ apartments went boom.

PetertheRock, Turn your water faucets on with a slight flow. That goes for hot and cold water both. Don't forget the shower and tub. This will keep your pipes from freezing. If you have a fan, turn it on at a low setting. Cold settles. Put a bulb under the kitchen sink, but not in contact with anything flammable. I assume you have an electric heater. IF THERE IS NO PROPANE remaining turn it on, One night won't cost much.
