Thinking about how times have changed through the years. I'm sure you have a similar stories. When my Grand parents would come and visit us on Sundays, my Grandfather would sit in the recliner with cigar in hand and listen to the ball games. Us kids would talk my Grandmother into playing cards maybe Flinch or Rook. She was dead set against playing cards on a Sunday and I laugh at the times when would drive in the dooryard. She'd throw a tablecloth over the cards so as not to get caught doing such a "sin"

The bar sure has been lowered alot since our grandparents time. I remember in 1968 when "Laugh In" was on the air, thinking how it couldn't get much more in your face. Boy, was I wrong.

I remember my great grandmother that lived in Old Town always kept her "medicine" under the kitchen sink and she would wink at me when she referred to it. Later in life I recognized the 'medicine' as a bottle of Jack Daniels!!

My maternal grandparents lived in Argyle and we lived in Costigan directly across the Penobscot River, so ma would row over to visit her instead of driving all the way around.

My paternal grandparents lived in Hampden and raised chickens and always kept a freezer in the hallway where they always had ice cream treats waiting for me and a cuckcoo clock in the livingroom that always kind of fascinated me.

Back in '69 my g/mother asked me if I watched the man landing on the moon. I had watched all the space shots and was a bit cavalier about Armstrong walking around up there. She told me that when she was a girl (1890s) they went places in horse drawn carriages. Then someone built a car, then an airplane, then faster cars and jets, and... "Now, my Lord, we're walking on the moon! Look at how things have changed in that short time.' Brought the thing into a whole bigger perspective for me. Loved that woman.

Nice thread GarlicGuy,

What wonderful memories we all have of our grandparents in Maine!
I had a friend who's mom also wouldn't play cards on Sundays at first either but she had 5 teenagers. All 5 of the kids each always had friends over often. Now picture about 10 teenagers around her kitchen table egging her on for a friendly game of poker. She gave in and before long it became tradition, Sunday nickel and dime poker games aroound their table.
