Having real all the way through this tome, there is one factor not mentioned so far. Maybe your neighbor simply didn't know what was under all that snow and didn't want to risk damaging what could be there. Obviously he didn't know the new neighbors and might not want to risk damaging their property, not knowing them and what their reaction might be.

Gussie, you feel strongly that it was so obvious your boyfriend could use some help that your neighbor must be a jerk for not offering to help. From your later posts, it looks like you also feel like any of the many reasons people have given for why he might not have offered to help are just excuses for bad behavior. Maybe the guy is the jerk, but I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt if all of this happened without a word spoken. I don't think you should reach a judgment about the guy without having ASKED him for help.

Your later posts seem to imply that asking for help would have made you a beggar. Without meaning to be insulting to you, I have to say it seems a little passive/aggressive for you to be unwilling to step up and ask for help, but to turn around and trash your neighbor when he doesn't step up and offer to help. Mainers are typically straightforward. If you want help, ask for it. If he doesn't want to give you help, he'll say no. If he says no, then you can decide he's a jerk!

I hope things go better for you. As others have said, many Mainers will go out of their way to help. That's certainly been my experience.

Gussie, I'm thinking it would be good to just chalk it up to the guy being inattentive or uncaring (or both) and look to see if your other neighbors are more friendly. I do know, had you been in our neighborhood, this wouldn't have happened!

I hadn't really thought about snow removal but thanks all of you, mensaguy will keep some cash in the house for snowplowers. You all are right, we pay to have our yard mowed, we should pay to have our snow shoveled. See, ya'll are helping us to know these things before we get there.

Ahh, first time we met each other. Both of us were on our best behavior.
