Well, bummer. I'll have to go check my RDC site and see if I've got the other you've all mentioned marked off.

I thought Campobello Island was actually Canada?? Moving to Maine is wild, crazy hair brained scheme for me. Buying in another country?? *shivers* No! Not that brave!!

I've looked in areas other than Eastport though. Calais and Baileyville come to mind as places in the general area that have homes at decent prices. I just want to be near a nice little downtown with antique stores and mom and pop places ............ and of course close enough to smell the salt air and hear the seagulls. Other than that, I'm totally not picky. But I do prefer Eastport....

Default More than Eastport

Eastport is wonderful and I am there every Sunday to enjoy the dock and do my drive around the island. So I understand. Eastport is what brought me to Maine, yet I choose to live right outside of the island. I can have more land, live in a small wonderful community, live right on the water, and still enjoy all that Eastport has to offer. I shop often at the Foodliner, have brunch at the WACO, and am able to be there for the 4th of July and salmon festival. You mentioned maybe Calais or Balieyville-if you are looking for salt air and ocean I would not include those two places. Also, the mill in Balieyville does put out an unpleasant smell which I can never get used to. Perhaps, you could explore the areas of Pembroke, Perry, Charlotte, Robinston, and Red Beach. All are small little towns that have water and lots of it. There are several lovely old homes currently for sale in the surrounding areas under 100K that are in a far better shape than the Orange st or Hawkes street listings.

The house on Hawkes has a nice fenced yard. The house has been remuddled a few times and I remember that the ceilings were really low, like 6 1/2 feet. There are some really cool houses on Hawkes, but I don't think that is one.

"Remuddled".... I love it! That is the perfect word for the house we are currently in. It sure isn't laid out the same way it was built 150 years ago.

Seems like housing/land prices in Eastport haven't changed much in the last 18-24 months -- despite the economic crash. There are two lots I've been watching and waiting for price reductions on but nothing has changed. Both are waterfront.

We have about a 12 month lag this far up. Prices seem to be leveling off up here. The market itself is kinda soft. Not many sale this year at all. Waterfront still seems to be at a premium in town.

Some of the things that have sold have been reduced, but according to Robert Scott, things are selling at fairly close to asking price, but the asking prices have come down on a number of properties before they have sold. I can think of four properties that have sold in the last few weeks, and all of them are cash sales, so that is different from the big world.

It will be interesting to see if the market just stays steady in Eastport or if it drops. As for me. I hope the house I want goes up so no one else will buy it.
