Maine Writer, There is quite a colony of flying squirrels in Mattawamkeag. They are just about across from Mattawamkeag Park on the north side of the river. I have never seen one on the south side.
I have flying squirrels here. Cute little critters. They glide through the ash and maple trees by our stone fireplace when we have a fire burning. The picture in the link above was taken on my back porch.
The only flying squirrel I've seen is the one my cat brought in years ago after a severe storm. I couldn't save it, and my cat cried when it no longer moved.
Mollysmiles, I meant that most birds avoid humans and for them to not be afraid of humans, they may have had contact with someone who fed them or otherwise took care of them.
while my son and i were hunting in the woods this fall this patridge came right up to us,,and walked on beside us for a while,,,,,the oddest thing,,,not the brightest bird i've ever seen,,,but quite friendly..
now,,,,,if we only can get the deer to do this............
When we bought our first house in Holden, years ago, there was a female pheasant that hung out on our front door step. We ended up feeding her cracked corn for two years.

Pheasant are chiefly raised by handlers for sport and pleasure. There really isn't a wild population, although some can winter over for awhile if the feed is good and the winters mild.
