This is kind of politics, but it is Maine politics, so here it is.

Maine governor: No broad-based taxes - Boston.com (http://www.boston.com/news/local/maine/articles/2009/01/24/maine_governor_no_broad_based_taxes/?rss_id=Boston.com+--+Maine+news - broken link)

Baldacci says this is not the time to raise broad-based taxes in Maine, reiterating opposition to increasing sales or income taxes, he wants to cut unnecessary spending, and to spend about $200 million less next year.

The current gap between revenue and spending in the next two-year budget is $838 million.

The proposed $6.1 billion budget does include various fee increases.

Maine hospitals are owed $423 million for Medicaid services provided as far back as 2005.

So it sounds like he is spending more than he brings in, and is following the Federal example

I thought that deficit spending was 'bad'.

Just come stay with me! Won't cost you one red cent! Beware, there is no ACB in this entire state though, you'll have to import your own.
