$1.3 Billion for Amtrak:
Biden announces stimulus funds for Amtrak - Boston.com (http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2009/03/13/biden_announces_stimulus_funds_for_amtrak/ - broken link)

This HAS to bode well for the Downeaster assuming that funding still hasn't been allocated by the state to fund it once the federal subsidy is done after July of this year.

I still haven't heard anything on where the money is coming from to keep this corridor running after July, but assuming that the government is sinking in 1.3 Billion Dollars, I can't imagine they'd let state budget woes be the nail in the coffin for Downeaster service. I'm waiting for details, but I'm hopeful that some of this will not only help keep it running, but maybe go into improving service from Boston to Portland. Upgraded infrastructure and higher speed trains could cut the length of the trip by nearly an hour making it MUCH more attractive to commuters.

They keep threatening to shut down the Amtrack line that runs through here, but it hasn't happened in the twelve years that we've lived here. It alternates directions each day and is NEVER on time.
