Were looking for some good wildlife viewing opportunities in Maine, without going all the way to the Canadian border. Any recommendations? We ultimately are looking to buy a property in a wildlife rich area.

A lot of Maine has that.

We selected a home site, where our home overlooks two creeks flowing through a swail / marsh and into a river. Thick canopied forest is on either side, and lots of huge picture windows on three sides of our house. So we always have a view of our surroundings.

Wild turkey, moose, deer, beaver, eagle can commonly be seen here.

Default Best Wildlife Viewing

Wow, tough one because most of Northern Maine has excellent wildlife viewing. I believe one of the prettiest places I have ever seen while living up there is on the way to a tiny town called Buffalo. You go North on Route 212 then I believe at the end of Route 212, you take a right onto Route 11 and head to Ashland, Portage, that area. Keep heading North and as you get into Buffalo, there is an area where you can see Moose feeding in a swampy area that is surrounded by Mountains. It is awesome.

I use to live in the Aroostook County area in a tiny town called Smyrna Mills. One of the "past times" when I lived there was to ride around the "loop" "spotting deer"...you take a flashlight or big spot light and shine it out into the fields and hope to see a deer. Having come from the city, I thought this was pretty "cool beans".

Now, I am back in my home state of Connecticut and live kind of in the country and see deer out my front window in the pasture across the street. Also have seen coyote, fox, turkeys, hawks, owls and groundhogs.

So.....If you get a chance to ride up to "The County" which is what they call Aroostook...give it a try. You won't regret it.

Have to admit, I looked up Buffalo because I couldn't remember anything named that in the area. Lo-and-behold, there it was. Or at least the name was there, I don't think there is anything that resembles a town anymore (Like "California Settlement" up by Stockholm/New Sweden area). I bet I have driven past "Buffalo" a couple hundred times and never heard of it. You are right, that is a great area for Moose. Last year I saw several Bears right in that stretch as well.

Moosehorn National Refuge near Calais is also excellent for wildlife.

Moosehorn is great! It's so hard to narrow things down for posters sometimes. We were in western Maine this Fall-- I loved it, and that area is also fantastic for wildlife. 7th has posted some great pictures--remember the bear cub?
