There was a Life Magazine cover back around 1948 titled, "Happiness is a Jeep Full Of Kids." There was a black and white photo of about 8 kids riding down the road in a Jeep.

You have to be born way before 1948 to remember stuff like that.

Parents used to let kids have an old junker car to drive around the back 40 even in my day the late 60's and early 70's. We had an old two stroke SAAB we used as a "field bomber" for a couple of summers. That's how we learned to work on cars and drive! The terrain of the fields kept us from going too fast and if we ended up in the woods we learned how to get a car unstuck too...usually with jacks, boards and ropes.
