In a world where bad stories are far too plentiful, and good stories don't get told enough IMHO, I'd like to share a typical "Maineah" behavior tale.

This morning my son and his cousin, taking advantage of their day off from school, packed up their tackle boxes and poles to wander down to the local stream and do a little fishin'.

First stop is the local corner store for a tub of worms, a slice of pizza, and of course, the ubiquitous Maine frosty beverage, MOXIE.

While my son was at the back of the store picking up the tub of crawlers, a kindly elderly gentleman apparently "got a boot" out of the junior fishermen, and paid for their pizza. My son was pretty impressed with this little impromptu "kindness" and wanted to thank the man, but alas! He was gone by the time the store owner told my son that he has bought him lunch.

This is why I love Maine.

Default Great thread!

Enjoyed this one about a week ago about a lady's bike stolen and returned:

Elderly Woman's Stolen Bike Recovered - Portland News Story - WMTW Portland (http://www.wmtw.com/news/19149832/detail.html - broken link)

There was a little more in the Kennebec Journal, but I could not find it online.

Wanted to add: This story I posted is not "typical Maineah" because of the theft!

It's because this terrific 83 year-old woman rides the 66 year-old bike to a care facility (to visit a friend, if I remember correctly). And because the fellow who ended up with the bike returned it to her when he heard the story.

Great stories! The one about the lady recovering her beloved bicycle brought back to mind a story from when I was a kid.

For several years, our family rented a cottage in Raymond at Plummerville Cottages. (They're still there, by the way.) Upon settling in for the first time, my father noticed the toaster was a model from his childhood - one of the first electric toasters, I think. It was shaped like an A-frame; it toasted one side, then the sides folded down and flipped the bread thereby exposing the other side to the coils. He was surprised to find such a model still in use. The gentleman of the owner's family remarked, in true Maineah fashion, "Works, doesn't it?"

Just like the lady with her bicycle - why would she want a new one - the 1943 model works just fine. I'm with her!
