Its time for major reform in this State. LURC has run its course and this is just the first shot across the bow.

"When I saw hearings being conducted in Portland about land use above Greenville, I was incensed. That's wrong," said Rep. Douglas Thomas, R-Ripley, who is sponsoring a bill to limit membership on the commission. "When they develop the Portland waterfront, they don't hold hearings in Ripley."

Great article! If you're against 'taxation without representation', then this is just 'regulation without representation'. Whether the LURC is abolished or not, the least they should do is make its members come from northern Maine, residents themselves of unorganized townships.

At least that way, their decisions would be made by the residents themselves. Also would be a good idea to have term limits on those who serve. Some folks just get too "comfortable" in a position, and feel they have to answer to no one.

I truly hope that the whole mess gets re-arranged to the satisfaction of everyone concerned.

I think Ripley should host all meetings about the Portland waterfront.

Sounds good to me.

More on the history of LURC.

Growing by the rules in the North Woods | Portland Press Herald

This is one issue I can definitely get on board with!

If you ever have the chance to talk to Doug Thomas, he is a great guy and credit to the Legislature. We need more small businessmen like him in Augusta.

Not only should all LURC members be from the UTs, they should all be ELECTED! It is time to put an end to these unelected functionaries who govern 52% of Maine. The newly elected members would assist in the transition from LURC to regional government of the Unorganized Territories by the residents of same.
