My parents have been at their house almost 40 years. For the first time since they have been there, there was more water than the culvert could handle and the water backed up on the road and lawn. We were up all night trying to keep the basement as dry as possible.

So much for a nice balance. I think I'll start growing rice now.

We went to Baxter yesterday. One of the rangers told us 9" of rain fell in 48 hours. Helon Taylor and Chimney Pond trails were closed. We stood on the snowmobile bridge on the Golden Road and watched a stream we've never seen before rushing down the side of Katahdin. A friend with a huge camera lens was able to take great photos of the stream.

We've had to drain at least 5 inches out of our backyard pool. I tried to walk the dog in a field we usually roam yesterday, but I was up past my ankles in water.

On the bright side, the sun did manage to show up for 6 minutes today (yes, I timed it)

Oh well, it's better than hugging a woodstove.

Today, in Eastport, it's still wet and foggy but the wind seems to have died down and it's a little warmer today. I've got my fingers crossed that the sun will come out sometime today.

What I would give to snap my fingers and trade places with any of you for a week! We're in S. Texas where it's 95 with unbelievable humidity and we're waaay behind on rainfall. Everyone is watering like crazy to keep their plants and lawns alive and we know it's just a matter of time til they institute water rationing for residences. It just doesn't seem right, does it?

Here's where I'll insert my "See? Someone always has it worse."

We feel this way during February when it's impossible to step outside without one's nostrils freezing shut. Setting the alarm for 2:00 a.m. to stoke the woodstove? I'll take a little rain. Although that said, I do now see why some people feel that Londoners can be a little cranky.

I tend to remind myself of this everytime I walk outside, barefoot, through a lawn full of water.
