Hoping to come up next week and camp for a week in Evans Notch in the White Mts. on the ME/NH border. The State Forest campgrounds in the area (Hastings, Basin, Wild River, Cold River) do not have showers. Anyone know of any pay showers in the area? The closest seem to be at Moose Brook State Park in Gorham, but that's almost an hour away.

I am not a camper and I dont know the area.....but when I google Evans Notch camping shower facilities.....I am directed to information about "ColdRiver Campground and the Russel Pond Campground....AMC facilities and both list hot showers as part of the amenities.

I hope that this helps. Good Luck and have fun and stay safe.

Default Nope

Thanks Elston for the reply. Cold River campground which is in Evans Notch does not have showers. Russell Pond does have showers, but it's 1 1/2 hours away by car.

This is what it lists at the Cold River camp ground...
"
Basics
  • Single, double, and family cabins, most with fireplaces and kerosene lamps.
  • Indoor bathroom facilities with hot showers.
  • Central lodge with living and dining rooms, porch, recreation hall, and cabin.
  • Electricity in common buildings.
  • Linens (summer only).
  • Winter Cabin is self-service.
  • Activities: Hiking, canoeing/kayaking, biking, swimming.
  • Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible cabins, bathroom/shower, dining hall"
Perhaps the showers are just for the cabins.

Default cold river campground

yes, the showers are just for those who reside in the cabins. The AMC runs the Cold River Camp that you are referring to. It's not the same thing as Cold River Campground, which is State Forest jurisdiction. It's a very nice facility but not really geared towards tent camping, it's basically cabins, and they aren't cheap $55 - 60 per day per person! Not far from this is the Cold River Campground. That is geared more towards tent campers and RVs; the price is $16 per campsite. But they don't have showers

Ah I wondered about the cabin thing and did note it wasnt cheap!

Is a shower essential?.......(when we camped (as kids) lo these many years ago, we sometimes had a cold shower (and everone wanted to go first on a sunny day because the water warmed in the pipes.)....or we bathed in the lake.....or we heated water in a kettle and took sponge baths.

I hope that you figure it all out and have a wonderful time.

The rivers are so clean over there they actually invite you to bathe in them. They are COLD but very clean with nice rounded stone bottoms and sandy stretches. I would have absolutely no qualms about washing up in those rivers. If you feel you MUST have a shower they sell a portable propane shower at many sporting goods stores. I have one for our fall camping trip to the North Maine Woods. The shower runs on four "D" batteries and a one pound propane can. They light pretty easily and run fairly warm for about 7 minutes or longer if you place the feed hose in a larger bucket of water. We all like it a lot as there is nothing like a warm shower when camping.

You got that one right, especially after a long day of hiking for these tired old bones!
