So we finally found a home to lease on Bailey Island after months of searching. A lot of people have said it's remote, which we like, but could anyone else offer their opinions on the area? I heard there is a general store on Orr's Island, how is that?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

I have a hard time thinking of Bailey Island as being particularly remote. Bailey Island is reached via causeway which is a very short link from Orrs Island and from another short link to the mainland. Brunswick is a very short drive away.

This is a year round residential community that grows substantially in the summer, and the entire area is a near suburb to Portland....in fact, Brunswick itself is really within the greater Portland area.

Thanks for telling me that. Most have said it's pretty desolate, but we really don't mind that. Good to know though that it is a year-round community. We are currently in Cushing, which is a good 20 minutes south of Rockland. We like it here and hope to find something similar on Bailey Island. Also, I figure it is about 20 minutes from Brunswick which has much more than Rockland, and also is within a decent distance to Portland (as opposed to here which is about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs from Portland). I like the Brunswick area so we are deinitely looking forward to moving there next month!

Do you have a 6 month lease or year round? Many places are rented weekly on Bailey's Island in the summer so owners will often only rent them out for only 6 months during the winter months.
Bailey's is a nice place. You will be going to Cook's Corner in Brunswick to buy your groceries and that kind of thing. They are rebuilding the "crib work" bridge between Orr's and Bailey's Islands and there is a temporary bridge erected to bypass it. It's quiet on those islands in the winter. It is far from being desolate as the drive to Brunswick is quite short. 15 minutes to a movie theatre, Wal-Mart Super Store,Sears, Shaws, Rite-Aid and tons of other stores and restaurants not to mention the shopping Mecca of Freeport 20 minutes away! My DW worked at Cooks Lobster when she was in high school and drove there from Freeport daily. It really is a short drive. You'll soon learn the shortcuts to Downtown Brunswick on rte.123 and the winding back roads past Flying Point and Wolfe's Neck to downtown Freeport. Nice ride by the way. Summer is fairly busy like most coastal places but it is not unbearable. There are restaurants around Orr's ,Bailey's and in nearby Cundy's Harbor though they almost all close for the winter soon. We like that area and go down that way quite often.

Are the homes only rentals? Are there jobs in Brunswick?
