Hello, all! As usual, it's been quite some time since my last post(I'm pretty sure I preface every thread of mine with those exact words, but hey, it's the truth! ). I was wondering if some of you most helpful Mainers might be able to help me out. My boys(ages 2.5 and 1) and I love to read, and my toddler especially loves books that take place in the woods, or by the ocean, etc. Does anyone have any old favorites that capture the essence of Maine? One of our favorites that is set in Maine is "Miss Rumphius" by Barbara Cooney, and if I'm not mistaken, I believe Maine has something called a "Lupine Award", which is an award based on excellence in the field of children's literature, and lupines are a very important part of the plot in "Miss Rumphius". So, calling all Mainer bookworms! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Totally agree. Well-written, and timeless. He's a multi-Caldecott Medal winner, and richly deserved. We lost a good one when he died.

Here are a few lists:

And somewhat related, here's a list of authors and illustrators of children's books who live in Maine:

Thanks, guys! I knew I could count on you. Love the story about your sister puking on Andre the seal, Deer Isle! LOL! My sister used to be obsessed with the book/movie about Andre. Robert McCloskey! Of course! Didn't know why I didn't think of him before! We LOVE his book "Make Way for Ducklings", even if it IS set in Boston. Well, I can't wait to hit the library(and Amazon!) and grab some good reading material that will inevitably make me long for Maine even more! Thank you all for your responses; and I'm sure my little boys would thank you if they could.

Besides all the great ones listed, my personal favorite would be Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen.
