Hi Everyone,
I was looking at the webcam of Mt. Katahdin a few moments ago, it looks like there is snow on it....is it my imagination? Can anyone tell me if there is actually snow on the mountain!

Thank you!!

I don't see any yet but I bet there will be tomorrow. You might be seeing a part of the mountain that doesn't have trees because it's solid rock.

I went past on Friday and didn't see any but it was a little overcast. My parents and brother hiked into Gulf Hagas Saturday and didn't mention seeing any. It is suppose to snow in Island Falls tomorrow. October is not to early for snow, there has been a few years we have been able to snowmobile in the Western side of the state with two to three feet.

There wasn't any snow on it on Sunday afternoon when we went by the scenic turnout in T1-R6 (heading south) though they could very well have had snow there since then. 7TH Gen had snow in Rumford this morning!

I happened to talk to a guy the other day who finished the Appalachian trail by summitting Katahdin on Thursday and he said it was sleeting during the climb. He had been on the trail since March! There definitely is snow there now...don't know when it fell, but I'm pretty sure some accumulated last Thursday.

It sleets and spits snow on the summit all year long it does not necessarily accumulate though. The sun is still pretty strong in October and will quickly melt any snow that falls. I was looking at the east face where the snow would surely stay had there been a significant snowfall and I saw none. If there was snow on the mountain on Sunday you certainly could not see it from I-95. Katahdin was totally purple with no tell tale white cap. It may look different today but Sunday it looked bare.
