I live in the Catskills, but I know Maine a bit, spent my Honeymoon there. I decided to post here because I need a new wood stove and although I would say that wood and grass pellet heat is very prominent in our region I wanted to post here because I think you folks have a little more burn time.

So we try to primarily heat with wood, and my fairly new Jotul stove has some problems with the paint bubbling and putting off a very nasty burn smell that only comes from the rear panel of the stove where the bubbles occur.

It does seem rare, but I do get the sense that there is a "breach" in the rear panel from the inside that is causing this. However, I really can't seem to get any real information besides replace it and really nobody that I have talked to has experienced this with a wood stove.

Well with a budget that I don't have if I need to replace this stove what would be your best recommendations?

I certainly appreciate your opinions and have all the respect for you folks in Maine.

Thank you...

We were given a really old Jotul this summer. And by surprise there is a nearby Jotul dealership. I went in just to identify our stove. They helped me to identify our stove, and they can get a wide selection of replacement parts.

It is possible that if a plate inside and near the back of your Jotul burned through, a dealership could get you a replacement part.

Our Jotul has some firebrick inside. I wonder if your missing some firebrick? That could possibly account for too much heat gettign to the cast iron.

I spoke to the dealer about getting the missing coal grates for our Jotul, but they quit making coal grates for this model. I went to a local antique stove re-builder and got some coal grates from him.

I bet your stove could be fixed.

Thanks I was always under that impression as well, but the 3 dealers near me (30-50 miles) have never heard of this and 1 thinks I'm crazy. Had someone today look at the firebrick and it seems fine. Doesn't seem like any of the local dealers have ever dealt with this problem.

If the stove is new the first few fires will cause the high temperature paint to smell and if too hot bubble as well. I had a Vermont Castings stove that smelled like burnt paint for a while after it was new and the new soap stone stove we installed last season smelled like burnt paint for the first week or so too. I think this smell is pretty common on new stoves.
forest is correct in pointing out the firebrick lining could be damaged though if you have checked that out and are satisfied it is ok I'd just keep burning small, not overly hot, fires in it until the smell abates.
It's good to do it while it's still warm enough to open a window to get rid of the smell.

Thanks. Well after a thorough chimney cleaning today, and talking with a dealer who I sent pictures to and uploaded here, their tech has never seen anything like it. She called Jotul which can get the part for 320.00 (another dealer said 220.00) and labor estimated at 500. O the part takes 8 weeks to come from Norway. So I guess I have some things to think about. I know they do smell when new but I have used this from Sept to June for almost 4 years, so I would hope it's broke in.

There may be something wrong on the inside of the stove, the air intake damper or the thermo coil that controls the air (if so equipped). Something is making the stove over fire. It has to get really really hot for that enamel to bubble off like that. Check your door gaskets for damage. If they are leaking they will allow the stove to draw too much air. They might be compressed too. Open the doors and let the gaskets expand for a few days when you are not using the stove. If there are windows check that they are fully sealed. Any movement means they will also leak air. I assume you close the stove after lighting. These stoves need to be fully closed in order to not over fire. The gaskets on the door would be my first guess.

@wabanaki Thanks I purchased the home with the stove that invalidates the warranty as it seems in the language.

@
Maineah That's a good call, the gaskets on the door do need to be replaced but I am fairly sure it is not leaking any air to over-fire as I watch it all day and can keep an even consistent fire going and am aware of and cautious of not over-firing the stove and have tried to treat it with a lot of respect because it puts money in my pocket
