It was 1966/67 when the interstate was extended north of Old Town. The North/South lanes merged into two lanes at the Alton Bog. For a couple years it only went as far as Howland. As it was built at each exit it would divide into North/South again only because when they built the bridge overpasses at the exits they built both sides. At Houlton it was 4 lane from the Route 1 exit to the border. There were plenty of fatalities for sure. I believe the first was an accident just below Sherman where 4 people from Allagash were killed. Part of the original two lanes became southbound and part became the northbound when it was completed. Can't remember which section was which. Something very ironic was the fellow who was the foreman of the job completing the last section of the four lanes...(seem to remember it was between Howland and Old Town) died in a head on collision on the Interstate just weeks before it became 4 lane all the way through.

East-west highway gaining traction? | Portland Press Herald (http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php?id=179766&ac=PHbiz&pg=1 - broken link)
They could have the 601A spur through Rumford. Maine really needs an east west highway.
