We have camped as late as mid-October at Blackwoods campground in Acadia Nat'l park. They used to leave it open til late Oct. and you could pretty much camp for free, unless the ranger happend to come around and collect for the site. While we were there no one did.

Another time we camped in the mountains of Vermont in July and there was ice on the puddles in the morning.

If you are looking for milder winters in New England I would think Cape Cod or Connecticut would be for you.

When hubby took the post here in Calais, we were concerned about the winters. Our understanding is that most of New England gets winters that are much more harsh than what we've known in the past. BUT along the coast, they told us it is much milder than further inland. This will be our first full winter here. We've had rain last night, but Bangor, about 90 miles due west and inland, has three inches of snow this morning. I heard some of the other New England states got hit, too.

We had snow in Freeport last night but it switched to rain again and all traces were gone before dawn. It's early to get snow. I hope it warms back up for a few weeks before we plunge into the cold for the duration. It was a nice Sunday. We drank fresh mulled cider ,cooked a small turkey, ran the woodstove, and watched it rain, snow and blow all cozy and warm in the house.

We have had snow twice here in Central Mass....nothing to speak of, just enough to cover the ground and be gone by morning. When I was on the Cape, we got some rain this weekend plus a nor easter came through earlier and on Sunday. The waves on the beaches were spectacular!

We've been told by several long-time Camden-ites that the weather really is a little milder along the coast. Less snow and somewhat milder temps, but more freezing rain and fog. This will be our first Maine winter, so we'll see what happens.

There must be something to what always always heard about milder winters in coastal areas. While everybody else has been getting snow, we've only had rain. We had a thick fog on the river this morning, but when the sun hit it, it burned off fast and it's been sunny most of the morning. But I'm still shopping for warm clothes. When you live in the desert, you eventually toss all the sweaters, etc.

Go to wunderweather.com. Compare your locale to some place in Maine. Since I live in south eastern PA, but used to own a 40 acre property in western PA I compared these two to Bar Harbor (where I'm moving in about 19 months)through out the year. I found that Bar Harbor was almost exactly the same all year round to Bedford County, PA, and about 6 degrees cooler in the winter than Southeastern PA. When we got disgusting rain, they got nice snow. In Bar Harbor, they dump the snow into the ocean. I've seen big snows on the Geddy Cam in Bar Harbor disappear the next day!

It is illegal to dump roadway snow into the ocean.

Really? They dump it somewhere, cause they put it in trucks and cart it away. I figured they didn't dump it in the Northeast Creek! it goes somewhere!
