Well, I must say, someone went off the deep end with this one. Maine is going to require an ID for anyone who wishes to purchase a British Lemonade (Fentiman's Victorian Lemonade) which has an astoundingly low .5% alcohol content (a normal beer by comparison is 5%). The bottle is 9.3 ounces... someone would have to drink about 28 of them in order to have the equivalent of one pint of beer.

Here's the article, the comments are too funny:
Maine puts squeeze on low-alcohol British lemonade - Boston.com (http://www.boston.com/news/local/maine/articles/2009/10/29/mainers_will_need_id_to_buy_british_lemonade/ - broken link)

You also need an id to get those liquor candies.

I think that's a bit more reasonable though considering that it's hard alcohol and one can easily consume a high quantity of those in order to get drunk.

Making that lemonade available to those 21 and older is akin to making mouthwash available to those "of age" only (actually, most mouthwash has a higher alcohol content than the lemonade). Sure, someone could POSSIBLY drink enough to get drunk, but they'd likely get sick or full first. I highly doubt any high school or middle school student could put down the 28 lemonades required to equal a pint of beer... just like most won't pound mouthwash to get drunk.

Mdcdonald's, Redbull, Little Debbie, etc are far more of a health concern than this lemonade.

We also have to ID folks for the non-alcoholic beer.

LOL, one of the "concerns" was that it could be used in mixed drinks - better limit sales of Coke and 7-Up too then. This is from "Chief Asselin" from Houlton:

Quote:
The police chief is also concerned because a Google search of Victorian lemonade turned up recipes calling for it to be made with gin. He fears young people will read those recipes and add gin to their Fentimans.

Georgia is as bad, you cannot buy alcohol on Sundays (like they don't think you will stock up on Saturday if you really want it).

That used to be the law here in Maine when I was a kid. I remember a guy that would come to our house and sell my Dad a case of beer from the trunk of his car on Sundays at a slightly inflated price!

They just passed another stupid law that says in essence that if you have wine tastings in your store you have to put up a screen or a curtain to block the view of the tastings from children. These same children can go to a restaurant with mom and dad and watch them suck down a bottle of wine or a half dozen martinis but shame shame shame if the poor little children saw someone sipping a sample of wine in a store before they purchased some. What a load of you know what. You can thank Representative Webster of Freeport for that stroke of genius.
