I've heard people say they recommend a .30-30 or a .30/06 for deer hunting. I was just curious what most people use to hunt with.

I use a .300 win mag but that's due the long shots I take. When I hunt the Rockies I use it on Elk but use a .30-30 for Deer in the woods as the shots are close. When I hunt parts of the East it's with a .12 guage shotgun and slugs or 00 buck cause by law it's what I get to shoot. If I hunt a State that allows it I sometimes use a .308 semiauto.

Around here in southern Maine we are hunting deer in tight pockets of woods between suburban sprawl. I use a 44 magnum Ruger and my DH uses a 30 pump. Sometimes we swich off to a 32 special.

S&W SS 6 inch barrel .357 magnum revolver. Keeps the area to myself. For some odd reason, other hunters seem to be uncomfortable being near another hunter who uses a handgun. 6 quick shots clears the area easily. Easily holstered. No big heavy gun to carry around. Requires good stalking technique, since no blind from 3/4 mile away will work. Animals have a fighting chance. Needs a concealed carry permit if you want to keep it warm under your jacket, though.

Does it kick much? Probably had to install a recoil pad on it huh?

I use a .260 Remington or a 7mm-08. I hunted with a .30-30 for years and still have a couple but after 40 I got bifocals and the open sites were traded in for a scope.

How does your DH like the 30 pump?? I wanted to get one but heard from someone that they rattle a lot. I thought it would be something I could easily get used to as I own 3 pump shotguns.

That's funny. I've taken it out before and that was my complaint---the pump handle has a little play and rattles around on the slide. He has taken a couple deer with it since he's had it. He likes it a lot. It reaches out a little more than his 32. I guess he has a secret to walking quietly with it.

Corgi, I wish I had my camera this afternoon on my walk with the dog; saw four deer spring across the road in front of us, a buck and "the three sisters" as we call them. Way too far for my marksmanship but enough for my camera eye.

I told myself that the buck was the one that I wounded and he's busy making more Bambis.
