We are thinking of moving to Maine by next September. I will be teaching (I need to get the job first) and my husband will stay at home. We would, ideally, like to live in a community with a good school district that offers some special education services for our kids and is within a reasonable commute of a nice school district for me to teach in. Right now it looks like Lewiston is already hiring teachers for next year, but it appears to be not increadibly difficult to find a teaching job in Maine.
Question 1 - What could I expect, career wise, if I were to be a high school teacher in Lewiston Maine?
Question 2 - What would you imagine would be a nice school district to become a high school teacher in other than Lewistion?
Question 3 - Is there any area you would recommend we look into living where the schools are notable for good special education services? Thanks in advance

lewiston is an old mill town and is one of the more depressed areas of the state and has a real blue collar feel...Though it IS a lot nicer then most outsiders will give it credit for. My wife's mother and brother both teach in Lewiston and so does many of her friends who she grew up with in lewiston who became teachers... The pay I consider to be one of the better agencies to work in but if you really want top money then some of the more aflluent towns/districts probably pay a little more..

Most people I know who teach or just work in lewiston also live there.. I moved here from away and lived in Lewiston but didn't really have an appreciation for it until I met my wife.. I then saw that there is a very close knit community with in the city..

Lewiston is also linked with Auburn it's sister city.. Auburn is smaller and if Lewiston was the bluecollar city Auburn was the white collar.... Auburn has nicer down town area and has the mall, restaurants, car dealer ships, ect and is much more retail based... Suprising to some folks Lewiston has more business and office type of employment.. both offer opportunities for middle class/ and upscale housing opportunities with Auburn offering more rural housing opportunities where it is more spread out..

I think the biggest challange to teaching in either city but more so Lewiston has been the immigration of Somali's into the area... over the last decade thousands of Somali and west affrican immigrants moved here overloading the service areas of the city... I will not lie.....ALL of the teachers I speak with accept for maybe my MOL who teaches "kindergarten" have said it has been a difficult transition and has changed the school system dramitically.... the long term impact of this has yet to bee seen but it could go either way.. Some people "might" not feel comfortable sending their children to school where the demographics have changed so dramitically so fast...and at least have a valid concern of the schools can meet the challange and still provide a decent education.. For now though the microculture that is Lewiston and the close knit community are content with staying put and are happy with raising their children there.... Case in point....the former manager of the city who is has children in the school system is refusing to relocate because he didn't want to move his children out of the school system?? remember education is what you put into it..

Other then Lewiston I personally would be looking at southern Maine as I prefer souther Maine over the Lewiston Auburn area... our top rated school districs are Cape Elizabeth, Yamouth, and Bangor.... I love Yarmouth it is a beautifull town..

Even though it is mandatory in all districts to provide services I would "think" the larger more Metropolitan districts would be better equipped for this.. My oldest boy had trouble reading when he was younger and it was like pulling teeth tryin to get the school system to provide any support... this was Gray/Newgloucester... FYI

Good luck!
