It's just a movie from 1977 based on a story from the 1950s. It's for kids (mostly) and not meant to be taken seriously. I never felt it perpetuated any stereotypes any morfe than asking you what exit you're from (Spent 9+ years in Jersey at McGuire AFB; exit 7). People spend far too much time looking for something to get upset over, IMHO.
