I have read that if you put a capful of hydrogen peroxide in about a gallon of water for your houseplants, that it helps to aerate the roots. Also, never use straight from the tap water. Let it sit about 3-4 days minimum to let the water age. I have a LOT of houseplants, some that are at least 12 years old. A BIG green thumb to you!

Blueshire, I understand that protocol for "city water" but it hasn't seemed necessary for the well water, which is un-chlorinated. But well water may have other minerals that might build up in the soil over time as well, I guess.

So because I have city water I should fill my watering can and let it set for a few days? How does that make the chlorine go away?

It is a gas and unstable. It evaporates. But if your water treatment plant used chloramine instead, I am not sure... apparently they are doing this some places instead. Maybe we have a someone reading who works in water treatment and can elaborate.
