There are two banks in town - a branch of Bangor Savings Bank and a branch of The First - don't think there are any credit union branches in Eastport.

I found "Down East Credit Union" with a branch in Calais on North St. Anyone have thoughts on DECU?

If I was going to be in Eastport, I would use Bangor Savings Bank. They have much better resources than the other ones in the area. Plus, you can use your ATM card at any ATM and not be charged a fee. They also are eager to lend money to buy local homes. I don't know of a Credit Union in the area. There are some in Canada, but the money exchange would kill you over the long run.

Well, it kind of depends on your needs. It's true that Bangor Savings Bank has branches and ATM's all over Downeast Maine. However, The First has branches in many places in Maine, just different from the ones where Bangor has them. Some are down in midcoast where Bangor does not have a presence.

I read in 'Consumer Reports' some time ago that Credit Unions have a fifth of the fees that banks have -and- interest is paid on your checking account

The First has a checking account that pays interest (not much).

Jolly, I know that you've probably said before, but what's your time frame for the big move?

As soon as the snow melts ... will be towing my bus and would like to keep the chemical damage to a minimum; still trying to work out a deal for a rental

THANKS for asking!

I switched all of my banking over to our local credit union and have been very happy with them.
