I am sorry to say it, but you guys are putting the cart before the horse. This winter has been very mild for northern New England. However, the computer models indicate a rather strong cold front by next weekend with some snow chances.

How did we put the cart before the horse? We didn't make up the signs of spring, they're here.

Default wood frog - Lithobates sylvaticus

I was just outside and heard a wood frog! I stuck around, because I didn't trust myself , but I did hear it several more times!

There's a vernal pool on the edge of the property, a popular spot for these guys in the spring.

Maureenb - not much mud here as we have had a fairly dry winter. But I imagine there is mud for those that live with long driveways out in the country.

we've had a few cold days here this past week and raining right now - 3/29/10 but they are saying it could hit 70s on the weekend. I'll take it. Would be nice if the sun was out for Easter weekend.

"Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it."
--generally attributed to Mark Twain
Yes, the ground is probably slicker than (insert favorite metaphor here), but the frost certainly is out around here and the precip is pooling, and drains once the sky stops falling. Areas of clay always follow their own rules.

A pair of Mallards have spent the day dabbing and hanging out in the vernal pool. And I'm also thinking of how utterly splendid it will be, especially inland, the end of the week - great weather for special Easter dresses and egg hunts!

Biologist acquaintance at UMO are excited about this weather and said they will be out tonight in rain gear stalking frogs. Duh......?!
