Try naples or bridgton area near sebago lake. It isn't coastal, but you are about an hour from the coast. The cost will be less than camden. There are plenty of things to do - hiking, boating, swimming, shopping.

I do find it interesting that someone said southern maine would have a "concentration of people, boats, kids, jet skis, fireworks, drunks, and what have you." I have been all over the state on vacation, and that type of person can be found everywhere.

we are looking to spend about $1000 for a weekly rental. Maine has so many great looking areas. We are using VRBO. How does one decide?? LOL

Oops. I forgot a question. My husband saw a place that looked nice in Addison which is further north. Any thoughts on that?

Yep. Anytime anyone sees my Harris Point pics and asks how much I paid a night to stay there they are in shock when I tell them.

There are not the number of shops you may be looking for, but I pass right by 1000's of people wandering the streets with their L.L.Bean bags just to get where I am going.

It's a question of if you would pass on the shopping to see the real Maine.

Addison is a pretty area. There isn't much there. Nearby, over in Jonesport-Beals, there is Great wass Island. They have some nice hiking trails there.

Brooklin looks lovely. Why do you think it's not a good place to rent a house?

In the town of Brooklin itself, you have a few boat yards to visit. You could go to the reversing falls in South Blue Hill. Visit Stonington and Deer Isle, just to see real working fishing communities. They have a couple of very nice restaurants and are about half an hour away.
Blue Hill has some of the finest dining around, just 15 minutes away. Ellsworth for shopping, 45 minutes. Bar Harbor and Acadia Nat'l park are a little over an hour away.
Bucksport and Fort Knox and the narrows bridge, are 45 minutes to the north. The bridge has an observation tower on the top of one of the towers. The exciting thing is when the elevator breaks down. You'll have to take the stairs down.

I was searching on VRBO for Camden rentals for a friend, and found an apartment in town for $700 per week....

Spread the wealth. Why should Cumberland and York Counties and Eastport get all the press. Why not?? You don't like Brooklin???
