Hey guys,
We're heading to Southern Maine for a few extended weekends this summer and I would like to get in some fishing. Fly fishing is my first choice but I tried that last summer and only caught a couple of small mouths and I'm a trout man. I would still love to hit some streams in the Greater Portland region with the fly rod but I'm thinking that maybe I'll hit the surf because it should tend to be a little more family oriented and so my wife and my daughter and I can mess around on the beach while I can still get a little fishing in on the side. I've surf fished before but not in about ten years and never have in Maine so I'm interested in some locations for specifically surf fishing in Maine or any small stream that runs cool enough to possibly catch some trout in the summer. Heck, I'll even take a shot at some bass if you've got any suggestions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Chris

Default Fishing

The portland area is going to be too warm for much trout fishing. they are still there, and you can certainly go the local fantasy fishery, the Presumpscot. They put over 10,000 fish in 3 miles of water, so it should be like shooting fish in a barrel. Not my kind of fishing, but they say it is a social thing. Get the delorme and look to the waters in the northwestern mountains if ya want summer trout. Of course salt water is a whole different story. There are lots of places for that. Most any beach, river mouth or rock jetty will have stripers and maybe even blues. You can go after stripers with a fly (clouser minnows or some other big streamer) but mostly by summer it is better to use bait. Mackerel or sand worms off the beach or jetties is the best. I run them under a bobber about 3/4 depth or on a slider right on bottom with a crab float. good rivers are the saco, scarborough and the sheepscot in the portland area. Rock croppings, like at two lights state park, respond well to bombers, rapala's, or maybe yo-zuris fished right behind the waves as they break. Good luck, remeber fishing is like cooking, recipe's are meant to be adapted. so try different things and good luck

There are always folks fishing off the bridge between Falmouth and Portland on US 1.

I found this post in google search. I realize it's old, but others might find it as well. There is a website starting in Maine that can help you find fishing spots.

All the content is user created, so you can read stories about what people catch at a spot (i.e. it's not just a listing of lakes/ponds).

The site is YouHuntAndFish | Where to fish. Where to hunt.. It has a lot of spots tagged in the greater Portland area, including places to catch trout in the summer heat!

Down along Popham beach-the mouth of the kennebec river, seems to a fav spot for fishing-drive right to the fort, or close to a restaurant called spinneys (i think) and walk down to the water- many use bloodworms, sandworms, - but chunk mackerel is what worked when i use to fish there- I use to bring my son down - set the rod in a holder and play frisbee or fly a kite-with him, when no action- but when the stripers hit- it was great fun
the chunk mackerel will also work for bluefish

close to old orchard beach is a breakwater(pinepoint?) - many folks fish off that in the spring/summer
for mackerel, stripers , harbor pollock,
