There have been discussions here about private ownership of forest land verses parks or conservator-ships by out-of-state parties; and the state agency that regulates most land in Maine..

There are strong feelings about each side of the issue and who each thinks is best suited to guard the environment of Maine.

My take on the subject, is that I do not care for government telling us what we have to do. There are some that really want the gov. to tell everybody what they can do with their property.
This is not to say that I wish to put in a toxic dump site, but I would prefer to manage and do with my property as I see fit, so long as I'm not harming the neighbors.

I think that would be the major difference.

I agree. I do not need the Gov't or Mass. organizations coming and telling us that this State needs to be a giant park. I'm not a big fan of zoning ordinances either. To me they merely give creedance to the statement "I should be able to do anything within reason on my land but you need my permission to do anything on yours." Ironic, that.

What do Mainers really think about outsiders? I mean, besides "don't try to change our place to what you left behind." Do you reach out to newcomers, or have a certain set of values that you measure folks with? In some places I've lived, if you weren't a regualr churchgoer you were not considered a good citizen. Just wondering about Maine values in general.

Just as a new-comer to Maine, a person who now lives in the flatlands of Maine; from what I can tell I think it goes like this.

If your the kind of person who will stop any time a vehicle is pulled over to ask if they need assistance.

If you offer to help whenever a vehicle slides off the road into the ditch.

If after each snow storm, and after you finish clearing your driveway, if you make a round of your neighbors to make sure if any of them need a hand.

If you bring goodies to church most weeks.

If you bring your surplus to the community pantry.

If you bring coffee and cookies to the road crew whenever they have to make repairs on your road.

When we visited last, and met with a realtor, he told us about a recent experience. His car broke down around Thomasville somewhere, and while he was on the side of the road, 5 people stopped by to help him out, and two of them were ladies!

Great story but there is no place named Thomasville in Maine.

Maybe he said Thomaston? I don't remember exactly.
