I am going to start a new job working near Ft. Meade and will be relocating from the Midwest. I know nothing about the area and am looking for a nice apartment or townhouse to rent that is near the base for around $1200 to $1500 per month. Obviously looking for something nice, safe, secure, etc.

Comments, help, suggestions?

You'll want to look around Odenton & Crofton If you want to be really close to Fort Meade, Piney Orchard has nice apartments & lots of people are renting out their townhouses because they cant afford to sell them, though depends on how large a place you'll need, you may not be able to stay in that price range if you need more than a 1 bedroom apartment. They even have civilian housing on the base, however if you have kids I don't recommend it unless you plan to send them to private school because the Meade schools are pretty rough. I wouldn't want my kids going there. Odenton/Crofton puts you at about a 15 minute drive to work with traffic on a bad day. I'd stay away from actually living in Ft Meade or Maryland City. If you don't mind driving about a half hour to work you could check in Columbia or Annapolis.

I was gonna say on the base as a joke but ater reading what Govey wrote I guess the base aint really all that safe (for kids that is).

But yeah I would stay away from living in Fort Mead or Maryland City...possibly Laurel but I would probably opt for Columbia and take the 15-20 minute commute in.
