We want to meet up w/friends to spend a day in the Fall - it appears that Cumberland is about half-way between Pittsburgh and Alexandria, VA - anybody have any ideas on things to see? Maybe sightseeing, antique/junk shops, restaurants, etc. - Or, does anybody NOT think it's a good half-way point to meet up? Thanks for any advice.

There is plenty of stuff to do in Cumberland to keep you busy. We have a pedestrian mall downtown with little restaurants, quirky shops, and antiques. The Canal Place heritage area is also nice for walking around. If you are looking for more structured activity, there is a steam locomotive that travels up into the mountains from Cumberland to Frostburg and is stunning in the fall. Get you tickets in advance for this as they are booked in the fall. Another option, if you or your friends are into football, is to see if either Ft. Hill or Allegany is playing a home game. Cumberland has the state's premier high school football stadium. An average game draws about 3-4 thousand fans. A game featuring two local teams can double that total.

Check out mdmountainside.com for more info.

Thank you - I've never been in Cumberland. A pedestrian mall w/all those things sounds perfect! I'll check out that website.

Deep Creek Lake is about 45 minutes west of Cumberland and is wonderful, especially if you want to rent one of the houses on the shore for a couple days.

I do want to check out Cumberland and appreciate all the tips!

Reviving this because apparently the friend(s) from Pgh. think it's too far - anybody else have ideas of a good halfway point between E.Pgh and Alex. VA? (this would just be a day trip to get together)

Cumberland is only 2 hours from Pittsburgh, less if you live on the east side of town. Cumberland is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Alexandria. Any further west and north and you aren't meeting halfway.

You could meet in Breezewood PA which has not much of general interest, unless roadside development is your thing in which case it has plenty of that: A Defense of Breezewood, PA | Tod.FM Cumberland might be Breezewood's aesthetic opposite.
