Recently accepted a job offer for a position in Columbia, and have been looking around for places to live. I know Ellicott City and Columbia are fantastic places for families to live, but as a young bachelor, I'm not looking to buy a house and settle down just yet in family-ville. The depressing thing is that in my research for places that DO look appealing, the best appears to be Bethesda, a good 45-60 min commute for work! Are there any good areas that I'm missing that can provide a decent middle ground for local flavor while keeping me within a good distance of work?

Why aren't you looking at Baltimore? That's far closer. If you search this board there are several threads on living in Baltimore and working in Columbia.

It's funny you say that as shortly after I posted, I noticed that entire subforum, and started looking through it.

Yeah, Baltimore is relatively inexpensive and fun for a young bachelor.

Bethesda was the best place you could find? Isn't that more of a family-oriented town as well (besides being ridiculously expensive)?

Baltimore to Columbia is still about a half hour minimum with traffic. Silver Spring could work and is about the same distance away and you'd kinda be going against most of the traffic.

Why not live in Columbia, and drive to Baltimore when you want more entertainment or night life? You have to drive to your job 5 days a week, and probably only go out once or twice?

When I was single I used to work in Columbia and live on the water in Bowley's Quarters in Baltimore County. Except for snow days it took me about 45 minutes to get back and forth to work. It was worth it for me to be able to live by the water.

How about Canton, Fells Point, Federal Hill? They are all easy commutes to Columbia. I would think they would be more fun than Silver Spring. I'm not a big fan of 495 so I wouldn't want to live where I would have to drive on it frequently.

A good in-between point for you would probably be Catonsville...it's 15 mins from Columbia and about the same from Baltimore. And it's cheaper.

A friend of mine worked and lived in Columbia for a year, and ended up buying a place in North Baltimore because he couldn't stand the loneliness anymore. He has a long commute but he is busy now all the time and I haven't seen him in ages cause he found a girlfriend.

I don't think there's very much to do in Catonsville for a young single guy.

Ridgely's Delight or Pigtown, Baltimore. Close to lots of fun, close to 95 south.
