My husband and I will be relocating to Maryland from the Jersey shore as he is currently working at Ft. Mead.He has an apartment in Columbia which is a nice area, however it seems so congested and homes seem to be very over priced. We have looked in the Mt. Airy area but do not know anything about the area could some please fill us in on the area. Shopping,activities,,,etc...Thank you

^ not congested, easy access to 70 and 270. Only go there to Linganore wine festival, so don't really know much about it. Actually I could live there...

It is a mix of both development and farm land. I would say you probably would not feel the same amount of congestion that you see in Columbia. The commute will be a bit longer for someone working at Ft. Meade though. You really should drive out there to get a feel for the area. There is the Howard County, Frederick County, and Carroll County parts of Mount Airy.

Have you considered Anne Arundel County? Great schools in Crofton, Gambrills, Davidsonville, Annapolis, Arnold and Severna Park areas.

I have friends in Mt. Airy who have been there for 10 years and love it. You have a rural feel with some small community shops and are close enough by car to get where you need to be within 30 minutes. Traffic on the main drag can be heavy at rush hour (like all burbs) but, it's a nice area with a fairly close knit community. If you need the conveniences of numerous retail and restaurants close by like in Columbia you won't find it in Mt. Airy but, everything is a trade off.

You might also want to check out Sykesville (Carroll County) a little shorter commute to Ft. Meade but still out far enough that you won't feel like you're in Columbia. It's right off Rt. 32. Lower taxes, lower housing prices, but still some of the best schools in the state. It's a popular Ft. Meade commuter location.

Hi,
Well I am not too much familiar with the place.. But it seems a nice place to live.. If you think they are over priced.. then it is the case with most of the places .. in the county

The Mt. Airy area is beautiful, but the people I know who live there still come to Columbia for mall shopping and doctor appointments. They also leave really really early to beat the traffic to the fort, but that's going to be true for most places. Routes 70, 29 and 32 are very congested heading in that direction. IMO traffic's gotten a lot worse in the past couple of years.
