Annapolis, Severna Park, Ellicott City, and Columbia are very nice areas. I would recommend Ellicott City the highest.

Sykesville/Eldersburg is a great area for families--a little farther out than Columbia or Ellicott City, but not as expensive.

There is an area very near to Landover called Cheverly which is still a nice neighborhood. I have friends who live there. He has his own business which is housed in a Cheverly Tuxedo industrial park. Bowie, Mitchellville and University Park are other nice sections of PG county. It depends on how much of a commute you are willing to make. AA county and Charles county both border PG and have better school districts in general if you send your children to public school.

I actually don't live in Landover, but I doubt there's much wrong with it. You can probably rent a cheaper place there for a while and then look around and see where you want to settle permanently. I suggest the dad move first, live in an inexpensive location close to work then find out where you really want to live; and bring the family after you're settled.
IMO, once you get a load of the yuppies in Ellicott City and Columbia, you may decide Landover is for you after all. LOL
While I love Korean food (Han Ah Rheum and Lotte are in HOCO), you would have to pay me to live in Columbia or Ellicott City. After living in a historic neighborhood for several years, I have a deathly fear of Homeowner's associations. I also drive a POS car, and I don't want to live someplace where I'd feel pressure to buy something fancy because my neighbors are snobs. I live in a more rural area and I like that type of lifestyle. On the other hand, Howard County has some of the best public schools in the state, so if you have children, that may be attractive. The populace also has some of the highest incomes, diversity and education levels in the state. There are also good restaurants there. So, that may be attractive to you.
Schools are important, but there are lots of areas in the state that offer good public schools:

Did you consider trying to get a short-term lease or month-to-month rent in a place near work? Sorry, I am personally cheap. If you can do that, you can avoid locking into a mortgage or long-term lease in a place you end up hating. Living someplace "great" is important, but IMO saving money is also important. It's worth it to come and look for yourself. There are tons of places to live in MD (and Virginia btw) that may be just the place for you while being close enough to work so that you can enjoy life.
