Hi,
My wife and I are relocating to the area at the end of August and are pretty close to sealing a deal for an apartment on main st in Ellicott City in the middle of the historic district. Any thoughts on living in that area? We know that parking will be a bit of a challenge. Is it noisy at night? Is it a safe area overall? Do you think we'll have to worry about car break-ins if we park on the street or in the municipal lots? Thanks for all the info!

Chris

I have never been there late at night, but I cannot believe it would be particularly dangerous. I think you will be fine.

I did not know there were any apartments there. Good score.

Yeah we were just walking through town when we saw a sign up in one of the stores. It seems like a great location - we're moving from Vermont and Ellicott had that small-town feel we were looking for. I just know there's a few bars in the area - they seem like pretty classy establishments but I didn't know if Ellicott had a raucous nightlife.

Hi Very nice location, local brewpub is good, trolley stop serves nice breakfast. The negs: (sorry) I rented a home on Main street(25 years ago). We moved in and couldn't believe the fleas!!! We decided to use flea bombs. Put them all over the house and left for the day. Next day we returned only to see as many fleas as before. We met our new neighbor and told him our dilemma. He said not to worry everybody there has fleas, lots of dogs and the stream/wet area in the yards. Now that was a long time ago so it could be different. I really wished we had stayed but we broke our contract never to return. Still go to the brewpub. The Patapsco river is also an enjoyable place to hike/bike/climb. Charlie

Hmm good to know about the fleas We have a pair of cats who are strictly indoor. The landlords told us they have an exterminator come every 3 months to do preventative treatments - not for fleas, but for general creepy-crawlies. They told us that with that, they haven't seen any critters around in years.

Flea control has made some advancements in the past 25 years too - our apartment in VT had a bit of a flea problem after we moved in but we gave the kitties a round of Frontline treatment and haven't had a problem since

There are actually only two apartments in this particular building - someone's been living in the other one for awhile. We only found this one because we were walking down the street and saw they had a "For Rent" sign up - just blind luck.

Places that were helpful in our search were craigslist and apartmentreviews.com. If you don't mind complexes there are a couple nice apartments coming available at the Orchard Park complex - they were highly recommended at apartmentreviews and the people we spoke to there seemed very nice. Good luck in your search

Hi,

We have a friends who lives there. Very cool spot. You'll be able to get out and hike in nature or shop the charming businesses on Main Street.

Only two negatives I can think of...
1. Motorcycle noise on Main Street. It's not a big motorcycle hangout but you will have them goinging by outside your window.
2. parking. You'll find it, but you may need to walk a bit. YOu may nto get a space right in front of your apt.
