My 25-year old, single daughter has been offered a management position at the Hyatt in Cambridge on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. While it looks like there are lots of things to do if she's willing to drive an hour and a half, I'm concerned that the area appears rather isolated for a young active person. She will probably be there until after the summer of 2012. Can anyone tell us what's happening in the area, good places to rent-with golden retriever-for 900-1200/mo.-unfurnished, is it easy to get to Annapolis, DC, Baltimore in the winter for someone not used to driving in the snow and ice...? Etc. Any feedback would be so appreciated. It's a great career move...but...still concerned. Thanks, Hyatt Mom

Snow and Ice won't be persistant problems driving from the Eastern Shore to Baltimore, and yes Salisbury is the biggest city for many miles in every direction. She could also consider living further north into Delaware. Wilmington DE is a pretty big place and in the Philly metro area.

Depending on what she likes to do the Shore has a lot of activities. The ocean is close, outdoor recreation is right there, too.

The price range is good also. The Shore is cheaper than the west side of the bridge.

I and my 2 kids, in their 20's live in Cambridge. We live in the historical district of Cambridge and find there are tons of things to do. Salisbury and Easton are close by to do things too. Then there is O.C. and the small towns around there to do things. When I was growing up, it was isolated but it isn't anymore. It is full of people and fun and interesting things to do.

We didn't really have too much ice and snow last winter and I was able to drive to my mother's in Annapolis fairly good. Of course, I didn't go there when it was snowing or bad weather. To get to Annapolis is about a 45 min drive, Balto about 1.5 hours and DC about 2 hrs.

2nd Floor Waterview Apt (http://easternshore.craigslist.org/apa/2309903786.html - broken link)

Here's a link to an apt right down the street from her work and in close proximity to water activities and Rt 50.

Here's the whole listing from Craigslist for your daughter.

eastern shore apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

Cambridge is a good area so she shouldn't have any troubles.

If you have any more questions, you can DM me if you want.

Wilmington is as far from Cambridge as DC and Baltimore are though, and it's not nearly as big a city as Baltimore or DC.

I'd probably stick to the immediate Cambridge area for housing and just drive to the city on the weekend for fun.

Here's a link from another thread on here. Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed

Seems Salisbury is 4th for danger and Wilmington, DE is 9th on the list. Something to think about. Easton and Cambridge have hardly any crime.

Well, lets be honest. According that that website, Easton and Cambridge are not ranked well either according to crime.

My only thought about Delaware, was that if she didn't mind commuting she could live up closer to Wilmington and Philly and commute down to work, and up for fun without having to cross the bridge.

True, but she'd be traveling opposite the main direction of traffic if she ended up going to DC or Baltimore every weekend. I don't see the bridge being a huge impediment there.

Can you tell us a bit about what she likes to do? I went to college in Salisbury, and while I loved it there, I don't think that the Eastern Shore is for everyone. It is much different from living in the Annapolis/DC/Baltimore area (which is also where I was coming from when I moved down to college). It was great as a college student, but I can see how it could be lonely for someone moving there for a job without knowing anyone.

Default Thank you!

Hello everyone! I am the "daughter in question" who will be moving to the Eastern Shore! I just want to thank you all for taking the time to reply to this thread and helping me consider different aspects to think about as I make the move.
I currently live in Orlando, FL and have lived in FL my whole life. Activities I enjoy doing here on my days off include going to Barnes and Noble, walking my dog, Starbucks, Fresh Market for groceries, going out to eat dinner or just cooking at home with friends. I have a feeling that moving to a smaller town, I won't have any of the comfort places I enjoy going (ie Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, Fresh Market, Banana Republic), but instead it will be replaced mostly with outdoor activities. I love the outdoors, so I'm pretty excited about being able to ride my bike, and walk the dog, and go to the beach, and eating lovely seafood!
Those of you who live there, what types of activities are there to do? What do you enjoy doing on a typical free day? Is it safe to ride my bike along the water? What areas should I stay away from (ie Crime) on my bike or walking my dog alone? I just want to get a feel for what every day life will be like. Grocerie Stores? Coffee shops? Book stores?

Thanks again for all your feedback!
