Laurel is outside the back gate here on post. Parts of it look ok, but other parts appear to be sketchy. A good friend of mine couldn't move away from Laurel fast enough. She didn't feel safe there. Personally, I'd look into Columbia. It isn't a far drive from Laurel although rush hour traffic here can get pretty hairy.

Thanks Bree, I gather from the web that Laurel is not too safe, as are parts of Columbia! I must say that the more I read about Maryland the less it appeals as a safe place to move my family.
I've also looked at Bowie and Rockville, which sound afer, but have hardly any rental homes.

MD has a lot of crime, that's for sure. Bowie seems really nice, but your commute to Laurel may be longer than you'd like. Piney Orchard is nice too and not terribly far from Laurel - depending upon what area in Laurel you will be working.

Thanks bree, it's in South (west) Laurel. Getting really cold feet about MD, some people say it's crime-ridden and some people say parts are fine... Just sounds like not a good place to move my family to!!

Good Lord not all of Maryland is Crime infested I notice people tend to really exaggerate on the amount of crime in md, Howard county overall is on par with Fairfax or Loudon counties. There is a new development called Maple Lawn in Howard. I would look into that area and the surrounding area as good place to start.

thanks for the reassurance! Maple lawn looks great- but as a 'new immigrant' I'll be after a rental, which there don't seem to be many of there.

I've posted many times about Laurel. You should do a search of this forum to find past posts. Right now, you are taking the opinion of one person who does not even live there. Please do more research and take all others' opinions into account before making a decision.

Me again, after speaking to a couple of people who live there I feel more happy about moving to MD, and have narrowed it down to:

Gaithesburg (although still not sure about this one in!)
Olney
Damascus
Bowie
Severna Park
Silver springs
Greenbelt (old town?)
