I am an Asian Indian moving from NJ to Ellicott City for work and would like some recommendations for places to rent in and around Ellicott City. Budget is around $1500. Would like Indian groceries/restaurants in the vicinity. Thanks.

There is an Indian grocery store in the Normandy Woods Shopping Center in Ellicott City (Normandy Woods Drive and Rt. 40). I think it's called something like Ganesh Market. There is also another Indian grocery store in Columbia on Red Branch Road (off of Rt. 108). It's called Desi Bazaar. Both are extremely friendly and helpful. In terms of Indian restaurants, there are at least 3 different ones in Columbia, but I am not familiar with one in Ellicott City. Welcome to the area.

An Indian restaurant is now open in the Taylor Village neighborhood of EC, off of Rt 103. It's called Kabab Hut.

For future reference, there's a really good food blog for Howard County restaurants called HowChow. You can choose Indian cuisine from the list and see what's been published.

What part of EC will you be working in? Are you looking for an apartment or a house? Are schools a consideration? If you want an apartment, you might want to think about Columbia, just because there are more to choose from.

Thanks newhart. I would rather prefer an apartment complex (used to high rises). But there aren't many high rise apartment complexes atleast online that I came across. Schools are not a consideration. Safety is.

Old Ellicott City is charming if you like a small town feel. Check craigslist for rentals. I feel all of Ellicott City is pretty safe, but it gets a bit iffy the closer you get to Baltimore on Route 40. Most rentals seems to go for 1200 or so, so your budget is more than adequate.
