Is there a way I can get across the Susquehanna without using the Millard-Tydings? (95)

The height and the way it just throws you out there, out of the blue, scares the heck out of me.

I see on the map that there are two small bridges south of that, but I'm wondering if they're just as bad.
I don't mind driving a bit out of my way just to avoid that awful bridge.

Thanks!

You could try the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge on Route 40.

MdTA toll facilities: Northern Region: Hatem Bridge

North of I-95 you could also cross the Susquehanna on Route 1 over the Conowingo Dam.

Thanks! I did see that one there, although from Street View it looks nearly as bad!

Does anyone have experience w/ the Conowingo Dam, on Rt 1?
I know you have to cut aways north but I'm okay with that.
It doesn't look as stressful because on Street View it seem you drive right next to the dam
and can only see the one side of the water, and it doesn't look as high...

The dam is better if you don't like heights. It is just a tight squeeze through there.

Thanks, all.
Well, I took the dam. Very nice scenery on the way there/back, and not as bad of a cross,
but WOW it was 20 min. out of the way (I know, I said that didn't matter! lol) and now I'm wondering if the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge on Route 40 would be just as OK but not as far out of the way.

It seems like, visually, it might bother me the same as the Millard-Tydings.
Any other info anyone can give? Thanks. =)

The Millard-Tydings bridge isn't all that bad if you go into "tunnelvision" mode. It's level to the terrain on either bank and you can easily focus on the lanes versus the scenery.

I used to hate crossing that bridge when towing our travel trailer up and down the highway. I always tried to be sure no one was next to me in case a wind gust hit the trailer and caused unexpected sway. So between watching the road, my lane, and what was around me, I was plenty busy to be looking over the sides of the bridge.
