We are relocating to the area, and we found the Jennifer Meadows townhomes online and were wondering how safe the area around them is.
When I try to view images online, all I found were old images (very woodsy) prior to the townhomes being built. And we've heard mixed reviews on Severn and what areas to try to avoid, but since this is a new townhouse community, I wasn't sure if anyone had first hand knowledge if the neighborhoods around it are safe or not. We were looking at townhomes in Odenton, but they seem smaller and older than these. We are trying to stay close to Ft. Meade but also find a good, safe home and trying right now to do all our research from a distance until we can work out a trip up there for house hunting. Thanks in advance for any tips you can give us.

Those are very good prices on the townhomes. This tool shows a crime rate lower than the state average: Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed

The income in Severn is also higher than average. It is sandwiched between Fort Meade and BWI airport, so there is no easy way for crooks to get there. There is property crime, so I would lock car doors. But I really don't think you should worry about Severn, if it is convenient to where you would work.

My other suggestion is to use Search Homes for Sale & Find Real Estate Agents Who Put You First | Redfin for comparative price per square foot values. The house in the Jennifer Meadows development is $115/SF, pre-construction. It's hard to beat that price, and if you can wait, I would look seriously at it. If you are concern about break-ins, install a security system in the house. Many builders are pre-wiring houses for them now. DR Horton usually builds a much higher priced house, so I think they are a decent builder.

I also read the post about there being a public housing project in Severn. But, Severn is changing with the BRAC people coming to the area. Ryan is building some houses at $400K plus, so I don't think they would risk it in a bad area.

Default Jennifer Meadows - Safe area? Ha!

Somebody posted some misleading info. Severn is a large area, and while it may be above average in income, that area of Severn is lower income. If one wants to be within walking distance of open air drug markets, it might be an acceptable community. One has to drive by/through those areas to get to Jennifer Meadows. Still Meadows - bad. Spring Meadows - Bad. Pioneer City - bad (although I think they changed their name to something like The Orchards at Severn or some such nonsense trying to somehow escape the deserved reputation.) The local schools are some of the worst in the county.

There are some decent people in those communities, but I think they would prefer to live elsewhere if they could.

I wouldn't count on an alarm system being the answer to security concerns. The thieves (who will probably live nearby) can break in, grab your stuff, and be gone before police arrive. Locking your car doors might help, if you don't leave anything in sight. I've known people who left their vehicles unlocked just so a window wouldn't get broken by a thief that wanted to get in their car. Even if you manage to secure your residence, there is always the walk from your car to your front door that leaves you vulnerable to attack.

Other than being close to Fort Meade, I don't see any attraction.

That part of Severn isn't as bad as some people think. Believe me, I would know as I have lived in the Jennifer meadows community for 2yrs. I especially wouldn't listen to people who don't live there, therefore are more likely to have ignorant comments. And Severn is a wide area and there are good parts, and the area is changing due to BRAC and more construction is happening which is a good thing. And quite frankly, you can't consider yourself 100% safe ANYWHERE you live. My parents live in a very nice area and their neighborhood suffered some break ins. My parents then got an alarm system. Always take proper precautions wherever you are. Never think that crime can't happen in certain areas bc it can. We live in a different world today where anything's possible unfortunately. I would recommend getting to know the area and talking to residents to help guide you in your search. You have to see it for yourself.
