Commute Olney to Columbia (Potomac, Redland: house, live in, move to)

We are planning to move to Maryland. My husband will work in Columbia, MD. How is the commuting from Olney to Columbia during office hours? Will there be any problems with the traffic?

What about going from Olney to Potomac further south?

During office hours? There should be no problem at all.
The 2-3 hours immediately before (and after) though...

Same, same.

The issue is that the country back roads between these more built up areas
have only modestly more traffic capacity than when they were first built.
(for tractors and hay wagons).

First, even during rush hours Olney to Columbia isn't that bad of a commute. Potomac wouldn't be so bad either, but it's further away and has more traffic than Olney to Columbia does.

Secondly, The ICC should be open in a few months. The western portion already is open. It's a pretty nice drive. It gets expensive if you use it a lot though. For Olney to Columbia I would not use the ICC at all. Rotue 108 would be much better and shorter. Olney to Potomac, however, might be a good choice to use the already open portion of the ICC to get there.

Protip for olney to columbia: take 650 new hampshire to brighten dam road. I can get from columbia where i sadly live to olney where my parents live in 20 to 25 min easy.

An update to this thread: The ICC will almost fully be open on November 22nd. I still think it isn't going to be the best way to get to Columbia from Olney, but since it's so new then I could be wrong about that. The ICC makes the journey a lot longer because it goes to the southeast. Columbia is east/ northeast from Olney. Stick to 108, or the other suggested routes.

Olney to Columbia - the easiest is to take the local roads as other have indicated. Either 108, or Brighton Dam depending on where in Olney you are looking - to Rt. 32.

From Potomac - its much longer (although it is a reverse commute). Again, depending on where in Potomac, from Falls/River, you can take glen to Piney Meeting House and go through Derwood (Shady Grove/Redland rd) to 108, which will take you to Olney, then just follow the above. I had this commute for a few years (Piney Meetinghouse/Boswell Ln to BWI area). And it was about 45 min in the AM and 1:15 in the PM. I went in early and left early too.. pretty much 7-3:30.
