The best thing about it is it still has a lot of southern charm while its inhabitants will actually bother to pick up a book.
*No! This is only partially true depending on what part of the state you're living and visiting. In my humble opinion, for someone who has lived, worked and played in the South, all this talking of southern charm/hospitality is way overrated. In Maryland, you have some of the most nastiest, backwards ass, ignorant and dumb-downed people inhibit this southern charm that is quite trite and corny to me. As a Marylander, I loathe these types.

Underrated by whom?!!!

Aesthetically, Maryland is a beautiful state!

Culturally, intellectually and socially it might as well be a Barney Fife on meth!

They just seem to be in business for themselves. Hogan may be one of the exceptions to this.

I'm frankly sick of it and will move when I get the opportunity, unfortunately. It used to be a much more pleasant place to live. Things are changing rapidly.

The whole state is changing, but if you're looking for peace and quality of life I would suggest the Eastern Shore or parts of Western Maryland. They'll be the last to succumb to what I see as the shortfalls of Central MD.
I'm not sure where you got this. You don't live in Central Maryland but I do. Traffic is not a problem at all in Mt Airy it backs up a bit near Frederick but that is to be expected near the state's second largest city. Happily we have seen very little development in our 15 years here.
