I'd think you are right.

I think it would be tolerable, but this is not a drive I make daily. The Harbor Tunnel doesn't see as much traffic as the Ft McHenry tunnel, generally.

Please let me know what you think of my logic here:

I'm leaning towards 95 to Baltimore to 895 to 97 to 301/50 to 301 to near Richmond. I think the worst of Delaware is over by the time I get on Route 1 (I've got ez pass for the Del tolls) and the stretch through northeastern MD on 95 is usually good. I hop on 301 to miss late DC rush and have an alternate option around Waldorf (5 to 488). The main question mark is how bad will taking 895 through Baltimore (from the 95 split to 97) be? I still think you are better off taking a route through Delmarva. The time will even out in the long run to about a 15 minute difference, in my opinion. You will be stuck in traffic- is that what you enjoy?

895 is the route I always use. It usually has less traffic than 95 does.. I think it's a good idea.

If you want to get to 97, couldn't you also take 695 east from 95?

Yes, that's true. Adds about 8 miles.

But according to google maps I think it's only a couple additional minutes of driving time without traffic. With traffic (and I'm assuming more on 895 than that portion of 695), maybe it'd be quicker? (and IIRC I think the tolls are the same - $2?)

Certainly possible. I've driven that stretch of 695 probably 5 times in my life so I can't say for certain!

Use the St. Charles Parkway instead of 488 to by-pass Waldorf. It will end at 301 just north of LaPlata. 895 isn't that bad heading south.

Getting to 895 is the problem. Maybe you don't have a smart phone but you can check Google Maps from your home computer to see how the traffic is about the time you would be passing through. The area where southbound 95 approaches 695 (Whitemarsh) can get jammed up pretty bad.

If you take DE 896 from the Newark area south and just keep going straight, it will put you on US 301 toward the Bay Bridge. That will avoid the DE toll booths(last exit before toll) and the Bay Bridge is only in the EB direction. Once you take the 301 Delmarva route, you will probably decide to use it at times when it might even be more out of your way. The difference in traffic is that great! Once in Maryland, there will be no traffic lights until you exit US50 and continue on 301 south, in the Bowie area. Watch your speed, especially between the rest area and Rt 213 in MD, There is a State Police barracks at Rt 304. You should be OK at 62mph unless youy try to pass a trooper.
